Presents the importance of financial markets and institutions in a global society. Illustrates how financial institutions work for both businesses and the consumer. Broad coverage of different financial institutions within the context of a global society is presented. Includes the role of financial markets in society, financial transactions in a global society, and the commercial banking system.

Objectives

  1. Investigate the many ways that funds can flow from lenders to borrowers.
  2. Analyze the important role of commercial banks in a modern economy and dynamic financial system.
  3. Examine how regulating financial institutions can regulate modern economies.
  4. Interpret how interest rates play an important role in any financial system.
  5. Estimate the effect inflation has on interest rates and the prices of consumer and business loans.
  6. Appraise the importance of the Federal Reserve System in controlling the money supply.
  7. Explain the importance of investment options such as U.S. Treasury bills, mutual funds, and hedge funds.
  8. Explore the roles played by financial institutions in areas such as insurance companies, pension funds, and finance companies.
