The Associate of Science in Health Information Science degree program is an entry-level program designed to provide students foundational knowledge in the field of health information science. THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY’s online A.S. in health information science prepares students to become skilled health care paraprofessionals who manage sensitive health care information in a digital environment. Students who are pursuing a career in medical billing and coding with their degree benefit from choosing a track with medical coding emphasis. This track focuses on the latest material related to medical coding, medical chart auditing and insurance reimbursement.

Upon completion of the program, students should be able to do the following:
- Correlate knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and basic pharmacology to perform medical coding and insurance reimbursement tasks.
- Accurately code diagnoses and medical procedures using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and PCT standards and guidelines.
- Demonstrate computer literacy skills in managing health information, paper, and electronic medical claims.
- Apply medicolegal principles when working with protected health information and legal and ethical standards as they relate to the medical profession.
